Paraguay’s Female Farmers Break Barriers Through Digital Initiative
In Paraguay, where agriculture represents over 25% of the GDP, a groundbreaking initiative called “Women to the Field” is challenging traditional gender roles in farming and livestock sectors. Led by veterinarian Luján Servín, this digital platform empowers women to take leadership roles in an industry historically dominated by men in South America.
What began as a blog in 2019 has evolved into a comprehensive social media movement, creating Paraguay’s first digital community focused on women in agriculture. Servín, recognizing the unique challenges faced by women in Latin American farming communities, emphasizes that while Paraguay possesses rich agricultural resources, cultural barriers often limit women’s participation in the sector.
Through strategic use of Instagram and web-based platforms, the initiative showcases success stories of women who have broken barriers in Paraguay’s agricultural industry. These range from small-scale farmers to agricultural engineers and agribusiness entrepreneurs, providing role models for younger generations considering careers in agriculture.
The project offers specialized training programs adapted to the Paraguayan agricultural context, addressing both technical farming skills and business management. This comprehensive approach helps participants navigate local agricultural practices while developing entrepreneurial capabilities essential for success in the sector.
“Women to the Field” has gained recognition beyond Paraguay’s borders, attracting attention from neighboring countries facing similar gender disparities in agriculture. The initiative’s success has demonstrated the vital role of digital platforms in connecting rural women across South America’s agricultural regions.

The project exemplifies a broader movement in Latin American agriculture, where women are increasingly taking active roles in farm management and agricultural innovation. By combining traditional farming knowledge with modern digital tools, “Women to the Field” is helping transform Paraguay’s agricultural sector into a more inclusive industry that recognizes and values women’s contributions to food production and rural development.
