Paraguayan Wheat Exports Grow 76% at the Start of 2025
Paraguay exported 203,663 tons of wheat by January 2025, marking a 76% increase compared to the same period of the previous harvest. According to the Foreign Trade Report by the Paraguayan Chamber of Exporters and Traders of Cereals and Oilseeds (Capeco), shipments between October 2024 and January 2025 exceeded the 115,701 tons exported during the 2023 season.
This growth represents an increase of 87,962 tons compared to the previous cycle. Brazil remains the primary destination, receiving 99% of the total exports, while Vietnam and Bolivia stand out as secondary markets.
Sonia Tomassone, Capeco’s Foreign Trade Advisor, highlighted that, although January typically sees lower trade activity due to the soybean harvest, opportunistic sales—particularly to Brazil—sustained a steady export flow despite seasonal limitations.
Economically, wheat exports generated USD 3.2 million in revenue during January 2025, down from the USD 7 million recorded in the same month of the previous year. The decline is attributed to lower shipment volumes despite higher international prices.

Tomassone also noted that Paraguay processes a significant portion of its wheat production, with approximately 700,000 tons allocated for domestic consumption annually. Consequently, the exportable surplus in grain form remains limited, primarily targeting nearby markets.
Among exporting companies, Sumar Trading led the ranking with 12% of total exports, followed by Agrofértil (10%), Agro Silo Santa Catalina and LAR (9% each), and Ovetril (8%). In total, 31 companies contributed to Paraguay’s wheat exports by January 2025.
